MPD Novelty Patches

What is a NOVELTY PATCH ? A Novelty patch is a patch not authorized by the department. There are unit novelty patches, patches for fund raisers, patches for lost officers and the list goes on and on. For the purpose of this site a NOVELTY PATCH is a patch NOT WORN by the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police. Since I am not a member of the M.P.D.C. I may need some assistance in correcting a possible mistake. I am always trying to keep up with what is out there but with kids it has gotten harder. If you can help I would be grateful, I always try to get ONE of any patch out there....

This is a prototype patch that was intended to go on the side of the C.D.U. helmets. It is made of a really thin felt. For some crazy reason, it was denied ?? Go figure..

Over the last couple of years the market for M.P.D. Novelty patches has been blooded with very well designed patches that are almost impossible to obtain. As a collector of M.P.D. history for over 30 years this is unfortunate. It seems the only way to obtain any of these is to pay stupid money on eBay. I have seen a novelty patch go for over a hundred bucks when an antique authorized patch slides through for 20 or 30. This is very unfortunate and to me shows us the new mind set of "collectors". At the bottom of this page I will post what photos I have been able to find for some of the latest patches to hit the "market".

So, as you can see there have been a LOT of MPD novelty patches pumped out. Probably to many and well over priced as well. I apologize for the condition of the photos but that's the best I have been able to get my hands on. If anyone can send better ones it would be very much appreciated. I believe it is important to maintain the integrity of the history of any and all items related to the history of the MPDC.

Knock offs of the Death City patches. These two have two different sayings under the JUDGEMENT DAY lettering. On the left it say's "Third District" and on the right it say's "I'll Be Back".

The average cost of a patch when its being made is no more the $3.00. The more you have made the less you pay per patch. You will pay more depending on the amount of threads being used who does the art work. But like I said the average patch cost no more then $3 each to be made and commonly sold for $5 to $10 dollars. A novelty patch is a patch NOT AUTHORIZED by the police agency, it hold no value to it other then what your willing to pay. I understand a patch can be very desirable, but if it's not even a real police patch, consider what your paying for so, think and use caution........

A NOTE TO THE NEWER COLLECTOR:

Can anyone explain what certified means? Is this issued by the M.P.D.C. ??
