The D.C. Metropolitan Police have a long history with their Mounted Unit. Due to budget restraints their existence has come in gone. Today’s Mounted Unit was revised in 2000.

The Mounted Unit of Today
In the year 2000 under the order of Chief Ramsey the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police reinstated their Mounted Unit. Seventy years after being disolved, the M.P.D. began patrolling the streets of Washington D.C. once again.
Go to the right for a block and go right, stop cross over and take your second right. After that go about two blocks to the right then hook a right. Or you can turn around and go in that door right there – don’t you just love tourists 🙂
M.P.D’s first and only women ever assigned to the Mounted Unit, ” Mounted officer Miss Robin Szewczyk”
The Washington D.C. Mounted Unit may be small, but they are out there actively patrolling the streets of the district. After the officer completes around 10 weeks of basic horse riding and horse care they hit the streets. Currently there are seven officers and one Sergeant with four horses. The unit works both day and night depending on the cities need.

M.P.D. Mounted Officer David Moon
Officer Moon is a motivated Mounted Officer with the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police. He and his mount Seamus are posted in many photos above. Recently we were saddened with the discovery that his mounted partner of many years, Seamus had passed. When a mounted officer looses his partner it can be very emotional, often more so then a house pet . The bond between an officer and their mounted partner is different, they experience much more on a daily basis. Please keep Officer Moon and his mounted partner Seamus in your thoughts…
